Tour Highlights

Meet & Begin at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre

We start with a brief orientation at the Visitor Centre to review facilities, collect tickets, and prepare for the journey ahead. You’ll have a chance to explore the Visitor Centre’s Exhibition, which features ancient artefacts, reconstructed dwellings, and insights into Neolithic life. Then it’s a short shuttle ride to the Fargo Wood drop-off point, where the adventure begins.

Walk Through Ancient Woodlands & Burial Sites

Tucked along the edge of Fargo Wood lies the Monarch of the Plain, a massive Bronze Age barrow nearly 60 metres wide and 3 metres high. From here, we begin our exploration of the Greater Cursus, a 5,500-year-old ceremonial monument. Its enormous scale and mysterious function continue to puzzle archaeologists and captivate visitors.

Hidden Monuments & Panoramic Views

Continuing through the woodlands, we pass lesser-known barrows and the curious Fargo “Hengiform” – a small, henge-like structure rarely seen by the average visitor. We’ll pause to admire sweeping views of the Stonehenge landscape, with its rolling plains and distant ridgelines, before continuing through this rich archaeological terrain.

Cursus Barrow Group & Recent Discoveries

We arrive at the Cursus Barrow Group, home to some of the best-preserved burial mounds in the area. Learn about the grave goods once buried here – including weapons, pottery, and beads – and how recent geophysical surveys are reshaping our understanding of how this landscape evolved over thousands of years.

Follow Ancient Trackways to the Avenue

We follow the line of an ancient track once linking nearby villages, arriving in the valley where the ceremonial Avenue begins its ascent to Stonehenge. Like Neolithic pilgrims, we walk this sacred route toward the stones.

Approach Stonehenge at Sunset Alignment

Approaching along the Winter Solstice axis, we experience the dramatic moment when Stonehenge comes into view against the setting sun—a powerful reminder of its astronomical connections.

Mesolithic Origins & Monument Tour

Near the entrance, see where Mesolithic posts once stood over 10,000 years ago—long before the stones were raised. Then walk around the outer circle as your guide explains the site’s development, alignments, and shifting purposes across millennia.

Astronomy, Myth & Mystery

Explore the many theories surrounding Stonehenge: Was it a healing centre? A celestial observatory? A Druid temple? Discuss ancient myths, scientific insights, and the enduring questions that keep Stonehenge fascinating today.
