Tour Highlights
Meet & Begin at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre
We begin with a short orientation at the Visitor Centre to review facilities, collect tickets, and explore the Exhibition. View artefacts uncovered over a century of excavation, including tools, pottery, and gold treasures. Step into the reconstructed Neolithic houses for a glimpse of daily life 4,500 years ago. Then take a shuttle to the Fargo Wood drop-off point, where your journey begins.
Walk Past Ancient Burial Mounds & The Cursus
Our walk starts beside the Cursus Barrow Group – a cluster of Bronze Age burial mounds, once filled with grave goods. We then follow the edge of the Greater Cursus, a 5,500-year-old earthwork whose size suggests major ceremonial importance.
Explore Hidden Monuments & Overlook the Sacred Landscape
Moving through open fields and wooded paths, we pass lesser-known barrows and subtle earthworks. We’ll pause for sweeping views of Salisbury Plain – a landscape of ridges, trackways, and ancient structures. Your guide will highlight features and share how people may have used this space for rituals and sky-watching.
Follow the Ancient Processional Route to Stonehenge
Descending into a valley, we join the ceremonial Avenue, which rises toward the stone circle. Aligned with the solstice sunrise, this path once linked Stonehenge to the River Avon. Walking it today, we echo the footsteps of pilgrims from 4,000 years ago.
Discover the Monument Up Close & Learn Its Story
We walk a full circuit around Stonehenge. Your expert guide explains its construction, from timber posts to the iconic Sarsen trilithons and Bluestones. Seasonal alignments and new findings continue to shape our understanding of the site.
Experience the Moonrise Through the Stones
At dusk, we pause near the circle to watch the Moon rise through or above the stones (weather permitting). Timed walks ensure the Moon appears in twilight before closing, creating a powerful connection to the ancient past.
Discuss Stonehenge’s Astronomy, Myths & Theories
As the Moon climbs, your guide explores interpretations of Stonehenge – observatory, temple, healing site, or mythic gathering point – and the enduring mysteries that inspire debate.
Return to the Visitor Centre & Explore the Exhibition
We shuttle back to the Visitor Centre, with time to revisit the Exhibition or browse the shop.
